We should be slaves to righteousness. Simply because we consider ourselves to be under the grace of Christ does not mean that we should sin. If that were the case and we were to sin as we pleased, we would still be slaves to sin even though we claim to know God. On the contrary, we would not know God, and we would be in the darkness and away from the light of Christ. If we are to be slaves to sin, it will lead to death. But if we reject the wickedness of this world and become a slave to righteousness through the light of Christ, we will be set free from ourselves and inherit eternal life.
Now, by no means do I claim to be perfect. I’m as much a sinner as the next man. It breaks my heart that this is so, and I keep doing what I do not want to do, albeit with less frequency. But sin is still sin, and it is in man’s nature to keep on sinning. I strive to wipe this out from my life and commit myself fully to Christ, although I also realize the difficulty in this goal. This is why God sacrificed his Son, because he knew man is so weak. And despite my weakness, I pray for strength. Thanks be to Christ Jesus our Lord, who has saved me from this weakness and anyone else who hears the Word and believes it.
As difficult as it may be, and as weak as we are, we must keep ourselves from offering ourselves to wickedness in whatever form it may be, whether it is sexual immorality, drunkenness, idolatry, hatred against our brothers, witchcraft, or slander. Whatever the case, we are fighting a continuous battle, and sin is always trying to corrupt us. We can live according to the way of the world, and we can indulge ourselves with alcohol and sexual desires, but what will there be to show for it? Nothing. That path only leads to death, as it does not please God.
At this point we have to ask ourselves: which is more important, indulging ourselves in our youth because the world tells us that’s how we should live, a path that leads to emptiness and death, or is it better that we honor God, that we may come to know him through the gift of Christ Jesus and inherit eternal life?
