US Census
Posted On 03/16/2010 21:17:50 by CopperNinja

I filled out my census today.  I listed my race as "Other" and filled in "Ginger."  (For those in other countries, we don't have the same negative connotation associated with that word that some of you might)

I urge others to do the same.  The reason is that we stand to benefit from being considered a separate demographic group.  Rather than being lumped with other caucasians, we can define ourselves as a separate group.  This would allow us additiaonl visibility and continuity.  We could use this to shape political policy in our favor.  We could use it to shape economic behavior in our favor.

I wish I had thought of this a few years ago and had the opportunity to spread the word.  We have to start somewhere, though.  We can plant a seed this year and reap something great 10 years from now.

I have a funny thing I do that drives my family crazy. I put European American on there! I'm Irish. Hey, everyone else has a more specific "title". So . I really don't care what anyone else thinks about it either. LOL!

I disagree.  There are winners and losers from racial politics.  I would prefer a world in which race does not matter.  If members of other races are gaining special priviledges, though, I would prefer to have similar advantages.

As far as whether we are a race or not, it depends on how you define race.  Can you define race?  Probably not real easily.  If it means a category defined by physically visible genetic charateristics, then redheads are a seperate race.  Clearly this is a slipperly slope.  It does illustrate the artificial nature of racial distinctions.  I'm not the one who decided that the census should ask about race, though.  I'm also not the one who determined that the Voting Rights act requires a certain apportionment of majority-minority districts.  Nor am I the one who decided that some people should have preference in business dealings due to their genetic makeup.  I am the one who thinks that we should try to get on board the gravy train.

They said my response is legally required. What are they going to do, lock me up for not filling it out?

"What are you in for?"

"Knocked over a bank. What are you in for?"

"Stabbed my old lady. What have we got here? Fresh fish?"(prison argot for newcomer) "What are you in for?

"Didn't send in my census."

(The two prisoners back away slowly, scared out of their minds)
