Oh... I forgot.. how come you never hear about albino's? I am sure they are like a fringe race in and of themselves... wonder if they feel about being an albino, like we feel about being gingers? Overlooked (in a weird way) as being "different"..
Just a thought
:)

As a child I was picked on by whites, blacks, mexicans and felt as if i was from another planet LOL.

I remember sitting down at a job a few years back and a black guy told me " damn it I thought i was the only minority and was gonna get moved up to the second floor , but now they had to hire a pink brother look at you man your red , you'r gonna get a promotion quicker then me , damn it "

he said it jokingly  but deep inside I knew it was his way of taking a crack at the redman and try to keep us down and make us feel like outsiders.

I almost feel at times I am a different race. I met a girl years ago that had a "fetish" for the redhair but that has been very rare that anyone actually likes the hair and fair skin .
When she told me it was a fetish , I thought to myself am I a side show freak or sumthing ?

I once dated a fellow redhead. We were very young and went to the prom together, (I will have to dig up that picture, it's cute with some age between then and now), people asked if I went to the prom with my brother or cousin ..(insert relative). I am still friend with him, his name is Gene... only I call him RecessiveGene... ridicule and terribly insensitive comments... we laugh about them now, but at the time, we were terribly hurt

I don't see us a race BUT we do have the same issues of sterotypes like most races do. I read an news report a while about about a redheaded family that had children that were terrorized just because they had red hair. the family had to move two or three times because of it too. man i wish i could find the link. but the point is everyone should hug a redhead because we deal with enough stuff too.

I think you did a great job of touching on valid points such as the stereotyping we face and the crap a lot of us have had to endure.

Whoa! They moved!! I am thinking maybe we are being designed to rule the world... We laugh at bullying (with time and age behind us), and have generated enough fortitude to be able to roll with punches!  I am still thinking of my Mother, (a redhead), who taught me to hold my head up high and embrace being "different"... she would be like.. "me move... oh HELL no" lol

Red haired people evolved from the cro magnon man early in the stone age because the cloudy rainy forested areas of Britian favoured their skin tone for Vitamin D production which helped prevent rickets. There are small amounts of them in the middle east as well but its about as common as albinism is here except maybe in lebanon which has a significant amount of european crusader blood. Scotland is about 13-15% red haired and Ireland 10%. Northern England is about 20% oddly enough possibly because of the Vking and Anglo-Saxon blood (which red hair is also common in Danish and Norwegians who descend from the same cro magnon caveman as most Britons). Oddly enough Russians are also known to have red hair in rather larger amounts. I read somewhere it was founded by red haired vikings so that probably explains it. Red heads prolly never were in communities of ALL red haired people but prolly appeared among brown and blonde haired people as well. Oddly enough neanderthals had a red hair gene also which its probably linked to climate as all racial adaptations are. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/59/Temperate_rainforest_map.png

Temperate rain forest regions are probably what the red haired traits are linked to and the farther you get from africa the more genetically homogenious a group is which explains why it didnt evolve in korea japan or the americas as well.

Anyway thats just my theory on why red hair got widespread in europe mearly for climate adaptations which COULD be considered a race but considering 2 non red heads can have a red head kid, I consider red heads just a trait of the races of europe much like blue eyes or blonde hair.

Race:

  • any competition; "the race for the presidency"
  • a contest of speed; "the race is to the swift"
  • rush: move fast; "He rushed down the hall to receive his guests"; "The cars raced down the street"
  •

So I don't think redheads can be counted as a race in this respect.

However concerning 'racism' there is of course the issue of hairism. Maybe more appropriate.

No need to segregate ourselves further. There should be just one race of humans on this planet. The human race.
