Video Game Censorship

The government dorks should stop trying to censor video games. If I want to play a graphic violent video game I should be able to of my own free will. I'm for protecting free speech and defending video games from intrusive legislation and regulation.

I gotta agree with you there. I know parents object to some of these things (and honestly, I've not seen much of it at all), but, well, those parents should either try and monitor more closely what their kids play.

(And yes, I know that's almost impossible for some parents, and for that I have no answer.)

Well I have mixed feelings on this.

Some video games that I have seen are pretty graphic.

I have a PS2 my husband has a few games that he like to play that are not for kids.

I keep those separate from the ones the kids have.

I can monitor what my kids play at home, BUT my kids go to there friends house and I can't monitor that as closely. What I might think is not appropriate, the next parent might, so what is a parent suppose to do?!

See I know that there are adults that play games and such but isn't this suppse to be something for the kids?!

It might have started out for kids, but I think it's an adult thing these days (gaming).

 

It's almost a career, for some, and it literally a career for many others, with the tournies and all.

If you're gonna stop censorship of one entertainment medium then you have to do the same in other mediums.  And do you really want your pre-edolescent kids to be able to walk into a shop and buy a stack of porn films?  Or worse?

I have to say that I agree with Burg.

There really does need to be some type of censorship on things.

Its kinda of ridiculously gotten out of hand.

I think that's why they put ratings on games.. Usually, a video game that's really graphic will be rated M, for maturity. Although most video games have been geared toward adults, I suppose I'd rather my kids be exposed to fake blood and gore than out doing god knows what.

I'm against censorship, in most forms, but of course I have my hangups like all people.

I agree about the ratings, Hills, but I don't know how effectively they are or can be enforced.

And Burg, if I had kids, I'd rather they were watching porn that people being eviscerated in techno-color glamorized slow-mo.

Sex is the lesser of these two "evils" in my mind. But sex isn't evil, either, again, in my mind.

censorship has alaways been a bit of a quagmire of opinion, simply because what one person finds offensive another might not!

 I don't agree with censorship at all if that means controling what someone can and can't do in whatever medium they work in i.e. video games, movies, television or art.

 However what i do believe in is controls and restriction on how things can be distributed and clear information about content so people can decide for themselves if they want to see or play or not. If you play and are offended then you were at least warned. However dependant on the results of reveiwing before and certification commitee game and film makers should be prepared to accept that severe restrictions on how and where they may distribute and market their products

 In the end responsibility for what people view is down to the individual or in the case of children the parents! so if one parent doesn't want their child to play (for example) GTA4 then they just shouldnt buy it for them. If that child then plays said game at a friends house then the parent should take issue with the friends parent not the video game manufacturer (provided they have not broken any restriction on the distribution and promotion of the product)
