i've been trying to pinpoint why redhedd.com rocks, and i thought maybe people could help me out. here are some that i can think of offhand.
- It takes the idea of a "social network" and makes it have a solid theme so it's not so amorphous.
- It takes the form of a social network and makes it have a purpose: preserving and celebrating redheads.
- It is like myspace, but it's smaller, which means more personal.
- It's nothing like myspace: with myspace, I only communicate with people who I already know. In this redhedd.com site, I communicate almost totally with people I've never met before. This takes the idea of communicating online, which might be scary, and makes it feel totally SAFE. Everyone here is friendly.
- Steve created a truly friendly environment. More friendly than myspace. Less cool for cool's sake. Really, I think redhedds are a friendly bunch, if any stereotype prevails about them. As Steve said in a recent interview, they're less "plastic," and this is refreshing to have so little plastic all in one space.
- I want to reiterate that: this place is SHOCKINGLY friendly. How is it that strangers can all be so wonderful? It gives me faith in the world.
- Compared to myspace, especially, this site is aesthetically interesting. I'm especially thinking of the photograph posted each day. Often the photograph is challenging, not just beautiful, and I so appreciate that.
- People here are allowed to be themselves. We're all allowed to push our sense of self and push our sense of character. If redhedds are shocking or flaming or what have you, it's true here in that you can be the most of who you want to be.
- The space is small enough that I feel that things are being taken care of. I really am in a COMMUNITY. If there are weirdos who threaten our sense of safety, they'll be taken care of. That puts me at ease.
- Compared to myspace, this place has an intellectual component. There's a rigor to what people say a lot of the time. We all push each other to think through themes.
- Any more that anyone else wants to mention?
